Selling Machines

Angkor Wat, Cambodia

The last time we visited Angkor Wat everything cost a dollar. From cans of soda, postcards, the Lonely Planet to fresh coconuts chopped with a machete on the spot, the US dollar ruled.  As soon as your tuktuk pulled into to the Cambodian version of the food court, the kids came running.  “Sir, you buy postcard? One dollar.”  Your initial reaction is to flee, but take a few steps back and the experience is so beautiful.  If the reason we travel is for the connection, then taking the time to interact is well worth the effort.

It’s no secret these kids are being used for their “cute” effect, but you’re here, so enjoy the moment. These little mini-human selling machines are brilliantly fun. And if nothing else, you can use the opportunity to speak with the parents and learn something about their daily experience.  We can’t imagine it’s that similar to your’s.

Angkor Wat is not only a beautiful series of temples, it’s also home to thousands of Cambodians.
